The Gallery

These petroglyphs are older than written history.
The images not random, not decoration but sacred.

ANCIENT INDIGENOUS CULTURE OF THE SIERRA NEVADA

The Martis people lived in the Sierra Nevada from approximately 2000 BC to 500 AD.

Their presence remains in the landscape—through images tools, camps, and travel routes that still endure today.

They are part of a deeper Indigenous history connected to the Nisenan, Washoe, Maidu, Miwok, and other tribal nations who have lived here since time immemorial.

WHAT YOU’RE SEEING

These are not simply “rock art.”

They are ancestral markings—created with intention, meaning, and cultural significance.

Many Native communities use language that reflects their spiritual importance.

WHY IT MATTERS

These places are fragile and irreplaceable.

Once damaged, they are non-renewable resources and cannot be replaced.
