This site’s cultural affiliation is not known to us, though the petroglyphs appear to be quite old and significant to the region. In the 1990s, when the site in El Dorado County was threatened by proposed development, FSRA worked closely with local Native community members, the landowner, and county officials to help ensure its protection. Through sustained advocacy, meetings, and site-specific recommendations, the coalition succeeded in bringing broader attention to the site’s cultural importance. Later, a graduate student’s research revealed that the location had once served as an ancient celestial observatory, adding an extraordinary dimension to its meaning and highlighting the sophistication of the people who created it.
